Historical House Marker Program

2024 Season Recap

The Three Village Historical Society proudly reflects on a highly successful 2024 Historic House Marker Program , a season defined by rigorous research, thoughtful evaluation, and meaningful collaboration between homeowners, volunteers, and staff. The program continues to serve as a cornerstone of our mission to preserve, interpret, and share the rich architectural and social history of the Three Village community.

Throughout the 2024 season, the Historical House Marker Committee undertook extensive research on dozens of historic structures across East Setauket, Setauket, Stony Brook, Old Field, Poquott, Strong’s Neck, South Setauket, and Dyers Neck. Each participating homeowner received a detailed historical research summary, illuminating stories of former residents, architectural evolution, and the broader historical context that connects individual homes to local, regional, and national history.

As a result of this work, new historic house plaques were approved and produced, further strengthening a unified and visible marker program throughout the Three Villages. The season culminated in a Historic House Marker Reception on Dec. 12th 2024, a celebratory gathering that honored participating homeowners and recognized the dedication of the volunteers and committee members whose scholarship and care make the program possible.

A Program Milestone: 2025

Building on the foundation laid in 2024, 2025 marked the first year in which all approved historic house plaques were fully installed throughout the Three Villages. Collectively, these markers now form a shared, walkable narrative embedded in the community landscape inviting residents and visitors alike to engage directly with the history that surrounds them.

Looking Ahead: 2026–2027 Season

Applications are not currently being accepted. The next Historic House Marker application cycle may open for the 2026–2027 season, depending on the number of interested applicants and available resources. This pause allows time for continued research, thoughtful review, and expanded community engagement. Full application details, eligibility requirements, and potential timelines will be shared on this page if and when the next cycle is offered.

Historical House Marker Criteria

The Historical House Marker Program recognizes structures of historical, cultural, and architectural significance within the Three Village area. A structure may be designated a local historic landmark if, in the determination of the Historical House Marker Committee, is at least 60 years old and any one of the following criteria is met:

  • The structure is the site of an historic event that contributed to the cultural, political, economic, or social history of the Village, Town, region, State, or Nation.

  • The structure is associated with an historically significant person or people in Three Village history.

  • The structure embodies distinctive architectural characteristics of a particular type, period, style, or method of construction or engineering unique to the Three Village area.

Eligibility applies specifically to the structure itself, not necessarily to the parcel of land. Historic buildings that have been relocated from their original site remain eligible for consideration. Newer buildings (less than 60 years old), even if located within historic areas, are not eligible for this program.

Stay Connected

We encourage all participating homeowners, including those who received plaques, to remain engaged with the Three Village Historical Society and to continue sharing updates, discoveries, and questions related to their historic homes. Ongoing dialogue helps strengthen the Historical House Marker Program and ensures that new research and community knowledge can be preserved for future generations.

We also invite interested homeowners and community members to check back regularly or follow the Three Village Historical Society for updates regarding future application cycles, program milestones, lectures, walking tours, and related events.

Until next Historic House Marker season,
