Abraham Woodhull, portrayed by historian Beverly Tyler, leads tour-goers on a walk through the nature sanctuary that was once Woodhull’s farm. Tour-goers are introduced to the woods, fields, ponds, and bays that tell the story of Long Island’s colonization and settlement preceding the Revolution and the creation of the new nation. Participants on the tour will learn how Benjamin Tallmadge, head of General Washington’s Secret Service, set up an undercover message system, and will see copies of maps and spy letters. This Three Village Historical Society walking tour is designed for students, families, and adults. Tour lasts approximately one and one half hours.

All tours are $15 ($10 for TVHS members). Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time. Walk-ins welcome, but reservations are strongly recommended. Space is limited. First come, first served. Walk-ins MUST pay in cash at the start of tour.

 

Location: Tours leave from the Caroline Church parking lot at the Carriage Shed along Dyke Road at the Setauket Village Green.

DOWN THE WAYS, THE WOODEN SHIP ERA WALKING TOUR

Guided tour with historian Beverly Tyler explores the history of shipbuilding in Setauket, NY. Guests will learn about shipbuilders, ship captains, and families prominent in Setauket’s maritime history. The walking tour explores the Dyer’s Neck-East Setauket Historic Shipbuilding District where coast-wise and ocean-going ships were built and where these local families, lived, worked and died. You will see the carpenter shop where the construction planning took place and visit the area where completed ships wintered over. This tour will be conducted at low tide so that the bones of the schooners will be uncovered in Scott’s Cove.

​As a special treat you will see the home where Benjamin Tallmadge, General Washington's intelligence chief was born as well as the location of the house where Anna Smith Strong lived during the Revolutionary War and where she setup her clothesline code to let Culper Spy Ring chief Abraham Woodhull know where Caleb Brewster was hiding with his whaleboat to bring spy messages across Long Island Sound to General Washington.

Location: Tours leave from the Setauket Dock, Shore Road, East Setauket. GPS users can enter 58 Shore Road, East Setauket for directions. The Dock is across the road from this address.

EXPLORE & DISCOVER SETAUKET'S REVOLUTIONARY HISTORY

Discover Setauket’s rich history as you explore its architecture and beautiful natural environment. Take a peek into the past as you walk by 17th and 18th century homes of the early residents of Suffolk County and the 19th century homes of local sea captains. Visit the cemetery where the leader of the Setauket Spy Ring is buried, near the resting place of the artist William Sidney Mount. This Three Village Historical Society walking tour is designed for students, families, and adults. Tour lasts approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.

 

All tours are $15 ($10 for TVHS members). Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time.  Walk-ins welcome, but reservations are strongly recommended. Space is limited. First come, first served. Walk-ins MUST pay in cash at the start of tour.
