Together: A Book Talk for Kids and Parents

The Three Village Historical Society and the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library are sponsoring a very special reading partnership between 9-11 year olds and their parents, grandparents, or other caregivers. Made possible by a $1000 grant obtained by TVHS from the New York Council for the Humanities, Together: A Book Talk for Kids and Parents offers a forum for children to come to the library, together with a special adult in their lives, to talk about books and ideas.

The six 90-minute Together sessions will be co-facilitated by two educators and a librarian -- Liz Kaplan and Donna Smith of the Three Village Historical Society and Irene Eriksson, Children’s Librarian at Emma S. Clark Memorial Library. They have selected six books to be supplied by the NY Council for the Humanities. The sessions will alternate between picture books and chapter books to explore key themes in American life.

Families commit to read a book at home before each Together session. During the session, an open exchange of ideas between parents and children encourages family participation in learning while emphasizing the importance and pleasure of reading.

Participation is limited to the first 12 children/caregiver pairs that enroll. The only requirements are that participating children and their parents or other caregivers commit to attend each of the six consecutive sessions, and to read at home the selected book each week. The sessions will be on six consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6 – 7:30 PM. The first session begins on Tuesday, April 6th; the last ends on May 11th. Supervised childcare will be offered at the library to siblings, in a separate room from Together participants. A light supper will be provided to all.

Studies show that between the ages of 9 and 11 children begin to lose interest in reading for fun. Research also shows that involvement by parents in their children's reading has a strong impact on their future reading habits. Together gives them an opportunity to discuss a variety of personal, public, and historical issues through the close reading of selected picture books and novels.

Enrollment begins on March 20, 2010 in the children’s section of the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, 120 Main Street, Setauket. We hope that our Family Members will take advantage of this special opportunity to enjoy reading and grow – Together.  Link to: Together Reading Program Flyer/Form.
