Monday, September 20th, 7:00 p.m. Monthly Lecture Series: John Broven will present "Record Makers and Breakers" a history of the roots of rock 'n' roll. Meeting takes place at the Setauket Neighborhood House, 95 Main St, Setauket, NY. 7:00 p.m. - reception, 7:30 Members Meeting, 7:45-9:00 p.m. Speaker. The Monthly Lecture series is free and open to the public
Author John Broven will share engaging stories of the history of the independent rock 'n' roll record industry from its raw regional beginings in the 1940s with R&B and hillbilly music through its decline in the 1960s. His book, "Record Makers and Breakers" contains interviews with major players in the independent music scene, including Joe Bihari of Modern Records; Marshall Chess of Chess Records; Jerry Wexler, Ahmet Ertegun and Miriam Bienstock of Atlantic Records; Sam Phillips of Sun Records, Art Rupe of Specialty Records and many more.
John Broven is a renown expert on the rock 'n' roll era and has served as a consultant at Ace Records in the United Kingdom. A one-time co-editor of Blues Unlimited and cofounder of Juke Blues Magazine, he is the author of Rhythm and Blues in New Orleans and South to Louisiana: Music of the Cajun Bayous.
