Kristen J. Nyitray, Head, Special Collections and University Archives, Stony Brook University, will bring interested participants to the Melville Library at SBU for a private showing of two original manuscript documents bearing the signature of George Washington, relating to the Culper Spy Ring (1779, 1780), and of the newest purchase, a letter from Sir James Jay concerning payment for his service during the Revolution. Jay provided General Washington with the recipe for “sympathetic stain,” known to us as invisible ink (1808). Librarian emeritus Richard Feinberg will also discuss how the Washington Letters have been conserved. |
