Captain Edward R. Rhodes Memorial Collection of Local History
In 1978 the Three Village Historical Society established this collection "to discover and collect material which may help to illustrate the history of the settlement of the Three Villages" and "to provide for the preservation of such material." In 1983 the collection was officially dedicated and named to honor the Society’s founder.
Statement of Purpose
“The Captain Edward R. Rhodes Memorial Collection of Local History has been established for the purpose of preserving and making available research material concerning the history, development and activities of the Three Villages (the Setaukets, Stony Brook, Old Field) and their environs. The collection contains the papers, records and photographs of local individuals, families and organizations dating from the 17th century to the present. A further purpose is the acquisition of local historical materials that may become available in the future in order to add continually to the collection, thereby enhancing its value as the historical memory of the community.” (Adopted by the Board of Trustees January 5, 1983.)
An agreement was made between the Trustees of the Society and the Trustees of the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library to house the collection and provide space for the Rhodes Committee, its volunteers, and staff. This arrangement continues today thanks to the continued support of the Library's Board and staff.
The collection consists of a variety of materials of interest to the family historian, scholar, or those interested in local history, from individual manuscript items to collections of family papers, business records, photographs, maps and ephemera.
In addition the Society maintains an expanding collection of artifacts including paintings and other decorative arts, tools, textiles, clothing, household goods, furniture, etc. associated with individuals, businesses, and organizations from the Three Village Area.
To preserve the history and memories of this community our collections grow through contributions of items from the public.
